Periodontal, or gum, disease is the most prolific cause of tooth loss, affecting an estimated 50% of adults over the age of 30. Gum disease is a progressive disease that can deteriorate the gum tissue and bone that surrounds the teeth and increase risks for serious health conditions, like cardiovascular disease. At Carrington Square Dental, we place a high priority on preventing gingivitis and periodontal disease whenever possible. We also offer effective treatment for gum disease at our facility in Waxhaw, NC.

Symptoms and Causes of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is caused by a bacterial infection. While there are always bacteria in the mouth, when they are allowed to flourish and create plaque and tartar, bacteria can damage the gum tissue. If bacteria, plaque and tartar are not removed consistently, the gums become inflamed and diseased. Over time, the gum infection can result in deterioration of the gums and bone that can result in shifting, loose or lost teeth. The bacteria can enter the bloodstream and increase risks for type 2 diabetes, stroke and other health concerns.

Periodontal disease occurs slowly over many years, but it does respond to treatment. In the beginning, gum disease can be reversed, but even later stages can be treated with periodontal therapy. The symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Receding gums
  • Swollen, red or tender gum tissue
  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gum tissue (especially when flossing or brushing)
  • Shifting or loose teeth

If you have any signs of gum disease, you should seek dental care. Our dental hygienist can perform a teeth cleaning and periodontal exam to determine if you have gingivitis or periodontal disease.

Periodontal Therapy

The best way to slow or stop gum disease is with excellent oral hygiene and professional periodontal therapy. Our dental team can advise you on how to care for your teeth and gums at home. You may even be prescribed medication to help fight the bacterial infection. In addition, we can perform periodontal therapy in-office, including options like deep cleanings that use scaling and root planing to clean away tartar and plaque below the gum line.

Do not let periodontal disease ruin your smile and health. Come see us at Carrington Square Dental – we offer effective treatment of gum disease at our clinic in Waxhaw, NC.
